Welcome back to the Meet Our Team Q&A series. My name is Daniela Williams, Project Manager at ISE, and I’ll be asking ISE team members questions to help give insight into what makes us tick.
Today I’m interviewing Kyle Miller, intern turned full-time software engineer. Kyle will be heading back to his alma mater, Luther College, for their fall career fair.
Q. How long have you worked at ISE and what did you do prior?
Kyle: I have worked at ISE since June of 2018. Prior to joining the team, I was a student at Luther College where I studied Computer Science. I also spent the summer of 2017 as an intern at ISE.
Q. When you were interviewing for internship positions, what set ISE apart from other companies?
Kyle: When interviewing for an internship position at ISE, I just got the sense that this would be a great place for me to be. Everyone felt genuine and down to earth during the interview process, and I felt like I would be valued here even as an intern. I also got the sense that I would be learning a lot and working on some pretty cool projects. As a young college student looking for first time internships, I couldn’t have asked for more.
Q. You transitioned from in intern at ISE to a full-time team member when you graduated from Luther. What contributed to the decision to stay at ISE?
Kyle: I really enjoyed my time as an intern. I felt like I was treated the same as a full-time engineer, which was important to me. I had the opportunity to work on a mobile app and build a prototype for another project that is now in active development with a large team working to bring it to production. Working on projects that were important to the company as an intern was pretty cool.
I also really grew my skills as a developer during my internship and was surrounded by some very smart people, so I knew that joining the team full time would allow for even more growth.
Q. Just over a year later, what still keeps you motivated to come to work at ISE each day?
Kyle: There are many things that keep me motivated to come to work every day. First, I will echo the same word that is often used to describe ISE – “culture”. Many other companies make the same claim of having a great culture, and many probably do, but I think ISE’s is truly unique. We have a culture of learning. We have a culture of work/life balance. We have a culture of supporting each other and asking the right questions. We have a culture of continuous improvement. We throw fun events for the company. The list goes on and on. Ultimately, we get to build really cool things together and we have fun doing it. That is not to say that our teams don’t face challenges, but I always feel valued as an engineer at ISE.
Looking back on my first year with the company I am amazed at how much I have learned. Thinking about the opportunity to continue that growth in my second year with the team makes it pretty exciting to come to work every day.
Q. What do you do for fun?
Kyle: I enjoy being active and moving – whether that be biking, lifting weights or hiking. I also have done quite a bit of traveling lately. This summer I took trips to Mexico and Canada. Outside of that, I love spending time with my family and friends, playing piano and learning new technologies.
